Uncle Eddie Newchurch is a proud Narungga man born and raised in Port Pearce on the Yorke Peninsula, where he continues to live, lead, and serve his community. A deeply respected Elder, Uncle Eddie has dedicated his life to the wellbeing of Aboriginal people across South Australia, with a strong focus on cultural governance, community empowerment, and suicide prevention.
Uncle Eddie holds leadership roles on several key boards, including his position as Chair of the Port Pearce Aboriginal Corporation. He also serves on the board of the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, the South Australian Aboriginal Lands Trust, and the SA Aboriginal Housing Board — contributing his wisdom and advocacy to decisions that shape the future of Aboriginal communities and Country.
In recognition of his lifelong service and cultural leadership, Uncle Eddie was honoured with the South Australian Elder of the Year Award in 2020. His work continues through his role with Thirrili, supporting individuals and families at risk of suicide with compassion, cultural care, and connection.
Known for his humility, strength, and commitment to community, Uncle Eddie is a trusted voice and cultural guide who walks with deep respect for his Ancestors, culture, and people.
