Canteen’s ambition is to deliver one million meaningful touchpoints over the next four years so that every young Australian impacted by cancer can access the support and care they need.

Canteen is committed to a D&I framework that focuses on four priority population groups: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTQI+, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse people (CALD) and people living with disability.

For adolescents and young adults with cancer

Canteen continues to support young people and their families impacted by cancer by providing high quality, evidence-based support that leads to improved outcomes. We’ve been here since 1985 and we’re not going anywhere.

This past year alone, we’ve just marked the ten-year anniversary of hospital-based Youth Cancer Services and expanded support to parents – knowing that by supporting them we’re supporting the home situation of the young people in their families.

Canteen has continued to support young people impacted by cancer in 2019/20 by providing high quality, evidence-based support that leads to improved outcomes.

Every year, Canteen takes great strides forward in supporting more young people affected by cancer in a greater variety of ways and last year was no exception.

In 2017/18 Canteen’s focus has been to continue expanding the raft of ways we support young people, including through our online support service which experienced a huge 40% increase in use from last year.

The more detailed Annual Report for 2015/16 was combined with the 2016/17 report. This is a brief summary report for the 2015/16 financial year.

During 2014/15, we implemented world class initiatives to ensure very good outcomes for young people living with cancer and provided more support options than ever before.

Phase 3 of the Youth Cancer Services Program ran from 2017 to 2020. An independent evaluation of Phase 3 was conducted by the SAX Institute drawing on program documentation, activity data and surveys and interviews.

The Deloitte Access Economics report, The Economic Cost of Cancer in Adolescents and Young Adults, commissioned by Canteen reports on the financial and non-financial cost of cancer for young people aged 15 to 25 years diagnosed with cancer in Australia.

The report, Cancer Data: Adolescents & Young Adults in Australia undertaken by Canteen presents national and international comparative data for young people diagnosed with cancer in Australia.

The Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivorship Report lays out a raft of recommendations for improving the clinical, economic and social outcomes for young people who have had cancer.

To enable us to realise our true impact, Canteen worked in collaboration with Deloitte to measure the value of the programs Canteen delivers for young people through a Social Impact Analysis.

Canteen will operate across four strategic pillars to ensure that young people and their families get the best possible support to cope with the immense challenges of cancer.

The actions in this Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan prioritise building and strengthening our relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and organisations.
